An inspirational facility where dementia sufferers can flourish
3 things we can learn from Jean Makesh, CEO Lantern
If you aren’t already familiar with Lantern Chagrin Valley and Saybrook, it’s worth a few minutes of your time to learn more about these amazing facilities. CEO Jean Makesh believes that Alzheimer and Dementia sufferers should live a fulfilling and exciting life in an environment where they can thrive and flourish. His passion and vision have resulted in the creation of two stunning facilities that any one of us would happily call home. There are 3 things we can learn from Makesh:
(1) With vision and out of the box thinking, you can create magic
In an article with upworthy.com, Makesh poses the question “What if we design an environment that looks like outside?”. His goal was to minimise the confusion often faced by residents with Alzheimer and Dementia. The end result is a world with main streets and individual ‘homes’ that resemble a residential neighbourhood from the 1930s and 40s, proving anything is possible when you dream big.
(2) Nothing is impossible when you have the right team
Working collaboratively with a team of like-minded providers helped realise the vision. From the architect through to the team who staff the Lantern facilities, everyone shares a common vision of creating a nurturing and caring environment for the people who reside there.
(3) Technology is an enabler – and the possibilities are endless
Ever evolving technology provides the opportunity to do great things – lighting (where the ceiling reflects daytime and nighttime), music, sound and smell are all facilitated through the careful application of technology. One of the most critical applications of technology at Lantern is to create an environment that is safe for the residents and staff, while still allowing residents to wander freely through the facility. With 24/7 camera monitoring and the right access control solution in place, residents retain an important sense of autonomy yet are secure in their environment.
